Not Loose Yet, 1870. Artist: Joseph Swain

Not Loose Yet, 1870. The British lion keeps a watchful eye on the Russian bear. The bear is shown gnawing at the sturdy rope that shackles him to the Treaty of Paris, referring to the 1856 Paris Treaty concluding the Crimean War. This treaty was signed in 1856 between Britain, Austria and France and was intended to preserve the independence and integrity of the Ottoman Empire. After the Crimean War, Russia had lost much of its influence. Various restrictions were imposed, including the demilitarization of the Black Sea. The Russians also lost all influence in Germany. Now, however, Russia was beginning to make diplomatic noises about the possibility of releasing herself from the covenants of the Treaty. Britain, and the other European powers involved, were reluctant. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 26, 1870

Not Loose Yet, 1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Joseph Swain. In this allegorical depiction, the British lion stands tall and vigilant, keeping a watchful eye on the Russian bear. The bear, representing Russia, can be seen gnawing at a sturdy rope that binds it to the Treaty of Paris signed in 1856 after the Crimean War. The Treaty of Paris aimed to preserve the independence and integrity of the Ottoman Empire while limiting Russia's influence. However, as time passed, Russia began expressing its desire to break free from these treaty obligations. This caused concern among Britain and other European powers involved. Swain's artwork beautifully captures this tension between nations through his intricate engravings and attention to detail. The monochrome black-and-white composition adds depth and intensity to the scene. This satirical caricature not only serves as a historical document but also reflects upon power dynamics during the 19th century. With its roaring lion symbolizing Britain's strength and determination against an ambitious bear attempting liberation from past constraints, "Not Loose Yet" encapsulates both political commentary and artistic finesse. As viewers delve into this heritage image partnership between John Tenniel and Joseph Swain, they are transported back in time to witness an era where diplomacy played out through visual mediums like cartoons and prints - capturing significant moments with lasting impact for generations to come.
