EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century, as Lord Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805) receives the young sons of Tipu Sahib, Abdul Khaliq Sultan (1782-1806) and Mu'izz-ud-din Sultan (1783-1818), as hostages at Seringapatam on 26 February 1792. The boys, dressed in traditional Islamic attire, are seen standing respectfully before the British general, who is seated in a grand, circular frame adorned with military regalia. Cornwallis, then serving as the Governor-General of Bengal for the East India Company, had recently defeated Tipu Sahib in the Battle of Seringapatam, leading to the capture of the city and the imprisonment of the Mysore ruler. The boys' fate was uncertain, as they were held as pawns in the ongoing power struggle between the British and the Islamic forces of the region. The painting, created anonymously by Henry Singleton, provides a poignant glimpse into the complexities of colonialism and its impact on families and communities.
