Lucretia, a virtuous Roman matron, was famously raped by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of the Etruscan king, while her husband was away. After the assault, she called her husband and her father to witness her suicide, taking her own life to preserve her honor. This tragic event led to the downfall of the Tarquin monarchy and the rise of the Roman Republic. The painting captures the moment of Lucretia's despair and resolution, with her semi-dressed state emphasizing her vulnerability and the harsh reality of her situation.
