The Luminous Fountain, at the Panopticon, Leicester-Square, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Luminous Fountain, at the Panopticon, Leicester-Square, 1854. Thousands of sight-seers have already seen the magnificent Fountain at the Royal Panopticon, with its central jet leaping from an enamelled base to a height of ninety-nine feet. The sight of this extraordinary column of water subjected to a powerful light, so as to exhibit a variety of the most brilliant hues, will surprise the spectator...A strongly concentrated and reflected light at each end of the Jet illuminates the whole length, effectually colouring, as well as making brilliant the up-springing shaft, with the detached particles which descend like a shower of many-tinted gems, into the inlaid basin. The indescribably beautiful effect of this illumination is most perfectly realised by the spectator, who takes his stand on the basement-floor of the building...within a foot or two of the projection formed by the galleries'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Luminous Fountain at the Panopticon, Leicester-Square, 1854, is a visual marvel that continues to captivate and surprise viewers even to this day. This photograph, taken in 1854, showcases the magnificent fountain in all its glory at the Royal Panopticon, a popular entertainment venue located in the heart of London. The central jet of the fountain reaches an impressive height of ninety-nine feet, making it a sight to behold for the thousands of visitors who had already witnessed its grandeur. What sets this fountain apart, however, is the innovative use of light to create a breathtaking spectacle. The jet is subjected to a powerful light, which illuminates the water column with a variety of brilliant hues. The effect of this illumination is indescribably beautiful and best appreciated by the spectator who stands on the basement-floor of the building, within a foot or two of the projection formed by the galleries. The strongly concentrated and reflected light at each end of the Jet illuminates the whole length, making the up-springing shaft and the detached particles that descend into the inlaid basin shimmer like a shower of many-tinted gems. The Illustrated London News, in its 1854 edition, described the Luminous Fountain as a 'spectacle of surpassing beauty and interest,' and it is easy to see why. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the time, and a reminder of the wonder and magic that could be found in the heart of Victorian London.
