Lump of Gold from California - value £500, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Lump of Gold from California - value £500, 1850. This "big lump" of gold is pronounced by competent judges to be not only the largest, but the finest specimen yet brought to England. Its weight, with quartz, is 14½ lb. troy...This wondrous product of the Californian dorado may be seen at Mr. Limbird's, No. 143, Strand [in London]...It was procured from the Auburn Diggings, near the North Fork...It is owned, we understand, by V. F. Perkins, Esq. of Maine...Its intrinsic value is, at least, 2000 dollars; but the holders have been offered 3000 and 3200 for it. They decline selling, however; preferring the chances of making a good thing by it, in taking or sending it home'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary photograph captures the wonder and excitement of the Californian Gold Rush in 1850, as evidenced by the discovery of this impressive 'Lump of Gold' from California, valued at £500. Weighing in at 14½ lb. troy, this significant gold specimen, accompanied by quartz, is not only the largest but also the finest example to have reached England at the time. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, describes the lump as having been procured from the Auburn Diggings, near the North Fork, and owned by V.F. Perkins, Esq. of Maine. The intrinsic value of the gold was estimated to be at least $2000, but offers as high as $3200 were reportedly made to its holders. Despite these enticing offers, they chose to keep the precious find, possibly in hopes of making even greater profits by exhibiting it or taking it back home. This artifact from the Victorian era serves as a testament to the allure and wealth that the Gold Rush brought to California and beyond. The photograph, engraved in black and white, offers a glimpse into the past and the extraordinary discoveries that fueled the imagination and dreams of many during the 19th century. The Lump of Gold from California remains an intriguing and valuable piece of history, a tourist attraction for those interested in the Gold Rush era and the lure of precious metals.
