EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Luther's Chamber at Wittenberg in 1845. The Lutherhaus, a historic building constructed in 1504 as part of the University of Wittenberg in Germany, served as the residence for renowned Protestant reformer Martin Luther throughout his adult life. The room depicted here showcases intricate flower-work painted on its ceiling and sides, adding an air of elegance to the space. The focal point of this chamber is undoubtedly the seat by the window, where it is said that Luther and his wife would often sit together. As we explore further, our eyes are drawn to the bassi relievi on the stove depicting representations of the four Evangelists, symbolizing Luther's deep religious convictions. Despite its historical significance, this room appears worn down and dilapidated. It relies on bearers along its center for support. Above the door leading to a bedroom and lecture-room once used by a professor named Peter the Great inscribed his name—an intriguing detail that adds another layer to this already rich narrative. Within these walls lie various relics associated with Luther himself: his throne or professor's chair from which he delivered influential lectures, embroidery crafted by his wife, and even a cup rumored to have been broken during an argument with her—a testament to their human complexities. Through this remarkable engraving from "Illustrated London News" in 1845, we are transported back in time—immersing ourselves in history while marveling at both architectural beauty and personal artifacts that offer glimpses into Martin Luther's extraordinary life.
