M. Petin's "System of Aerial Navigation", 1850. French milliner and balloonist Ernest Petin..has sought to give to his apparatus the greatest possible power, while diminishing the resistance he has to overcome. This resistance is the surrounding medium - the air. He has given himself great power by employing four spherical balloons of immense volume...M. Petin has, always with the view of diminishing resistance, placed his balloons one behind the other; and he has armed the prow of his ship with a conical appendage, that it may cleave the air more easily. His balloons, of which each, says he, should have the diameter of the Corn-Exchange of Paris - say 90 feet - are joined together by an immense framework, 162½ yards long by about 70½ yards broad, upon which the passengers will be placed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
M. Petin's System of Aerial Navigation, 1850: A Visionary Concept in 19th Century Air Transport This image depicts M. Petin's System of Aerial Navigation, an audacious attempt at air travel by the French milliner and balloonist Ernest Petin. The illustration, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases Petin's innovative design that aimed to minimize resistance and maximize power in defiance of the surrounding air medium. Petin's design consisted of four enormous spherical balloons, each with a diameter of approximately 90 feet, joined together by a colossal framework measuring 162½ yards long by about 70½ yards broad. The balloons were arranged one behind the other, and the prow of the 'ship' was equipped with a conical appendage to facilitate smoother passage through the air. Petin's ambition was to grant his apparatus the greatest possible power while minimizing the resistance he had to overcome. This daring endeavor, however, was met with skepticism and uncertainty due to the inherent dangers and perils associated with ballooning during the Victorian era. Despite the unproven technology and the risks involved, Petin's vision for aerial navigation was a significant concept in the history of air transport. His design, though unsuccessful, paved the way for future innovations and inventions in the realm of aviation. The image serves as a testament to the human spirit of exploration and the relentless pursuit of progress in the face of uncertainty.
