Madrid - the Queen passing La Buena Vista, in La Alcala, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Madrid - the Queen passing La Buena Vista, in La Alcala, 1845. Crowds watch the carriage of Isabella II of Spain. The large square building, conspicuous in the centre, is the palace La Buena Vista, which was built towards the close of the last century, by the extravagant Duchess of Alva. It was bought by the Madrid Municipality, and given by them to Godoy, then in the height of power. Confiscated in 1808, it was next made the military Museo, in which specimens of curious artillery and models of fortresses were placed. These, when Espartero was Regent, and lived here, were removed to the Buen Retiro, and they, probably, will be brought back again. The noble mansion contains a magnificent suite of rooms, and, in 1844, the Turkish Ambassador, Fuad Effendi, was lodged here. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in Madrid's history - the Queen passing La Buena Vista, in La Alcala, 1845. The streets are filled with eager crowds as they watch the magnificent carriage of Isabella II of Spain make its way through the city. In the center of it all stands the grand palace, La Buena Vista, a symbol of opulence and extravagance. Built by the Duchess of Alva towards the end of the previous century, this impressive square building was later acquired by Madrid Municipality and gifted to Godoy during his reign. However, political turmoil led to its confiscation in 1808. Subsequently transformed into a military museum under Espartero's regency, it housed unique artillery specimens and fortress models. The noble mansion boasts an array of splendid rooms that have witnessed countless historic events over time. Notably, in 1844, Fuad Effendi - Turkey's esteemed ambassador - found residence within these walls. As we gaze upon this engraving from "Illustrated London News" dated 1845 (Vol VII), we cannot help but marvel at how this snapshot encapsulates both architectural beauty and cultural significance. With its intricate details captured in black and white tones, this image transports us back to a bygone era when horse-drawn carriages ruled the roads and monarchs reigned supreme. A true testament to Spanish heritage and Victorian artistry, this print serves as a window into history for all who appreciate centuries-old architecture intertwined with royal splendor.
