EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 15th century sculpture depicts the Mahasiddha, or Great Adept, Virupa (837-909 CE). Mahasiddhas were enlightened masters in Tibetan Buddhism, renowned for their extraordinary abilities and realization of the ultimate truth. Virupa is one of the Eighty-four Mahasiddhas, a group of influential figures in Tibetan Buddhism. The statue, made of copper alloy inlaid with silver, stands at approximately 12 centimeters tall. Virupa is depicted in a seated position, with his right hand in the mudra of teaching, or "varada mudra," and his left hand in the mudra of bestowing boons, or "abhaya mudra." His serene expression and tranquil posture convey a deep sense of inner peace and wisdom. The statue is adorned with intricate silver inlay work, adding to its visual allure. The traces of paint on the statue suggest that it was once richly decorated. The statue's intricate details and fine craftsmanship are characteristic of the artistic traditions of the time, showcasing the artistic heritage of South Asia. The Mahasiddha Virupa statue is a rare and valuable addition to the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). It is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Tibet and the broader Asian continent. The statue invites contemplation and reflection, reminding us of the profound teachings and spiritual practices of the Mahasiddhas.
