EDITORS COMMENTS
Major-General Winfield Scott, one of the most distinguished military figures in American history, is depicted in this 1849 photograph from the "Pictorial History of Mexico and the Mexican War" by John Frost, LL.D., published by Thomas, Cowperthwait and Co. in Philadelphia. Born in 1786, Scott served in the United States Army for over 60 years, participating in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War. In this image, Scott is shown in his later years, dressed in the uniform of a Major-General, with a stern expression and a cane in hand. Behind him, a cannon and cannonball are visible, symbolizing the military might and power that he commanded. Scott's military career began in the War of 1812, where he distinguished himself in several battles, including the capture of Fort Detroit and the Battle of the Thames. He went on to serve in the Mexican-American War, where he led the United States forces to victory in the Battle of Veracruz and the Siege of Mexico City. During the American Civil War, Scott served as the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army, but his advanced age and poor health prevented him from leading the troops in the field. This photograph is a testament to Scott's remarkable military career and his enduring legacy as one of the greatest military leaders in American history.
