Major Theodore Winthrop at Big Bethel, Virginia, 1861 (c1880)

Major Theodore Winthrop at Big Bethel, Virginia, 1861 (c1880). Winthrop (1828-1861) was killed at Great Bethel on 10th June 1861. At the Battle of Big Bethel he volunteered for General Ebenezer Pierces staff and drew up a crude plan of battle. After a Federal attack to the enemy right flank was foiled, Major Winthrop led an ill-fated assault on the Confederate left held by four companies of the 1st Regiment North Carolina Infantry. Winthrop leaped onto the trunk of a fallen tree and yelled, One more charge boys, and the day is ours. Soon thereafter he was killed by a musket ball to the heart and became the first officer to be killed on the northern side in what history regards as the first pitched land battle of the American Civil War. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume III, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Major Theodore Winthrop at Big Bethel, Virginia in 1861. Major Winthrop, a courageous Union officer, met his untimely demise on June 10th of that year during the Battle of Big Bethel. In this historic image, he stands tall and resolute, embodying the spirit of leadership and bravery. During the battle, Major Winthrop volunteered for General Ebenezer Pierces' staff and devised a crude plan of attack. When a Federal assault on the enemy's right flank was thwarted, Winthrop fearlessly led an ill-fated charge against four companies of the 1st Regiment North Carolina Infantry who held the Confederate left. In an act of inspiration and determination, Major Winthrop climbed onto a fallen tree trunk to rally his troops with words that echoed through history: "One more charge boys, and the day is ours". Tragically, moments later he was struck by a musket ball to his heart - becoming the first officer from the northern side to fall in what would be remembered as one of America's earliest pitched land battles during the Civil War. This poignant engraving from Cassells History of United States serves as both a tribute to Major Theodore Winthrop's sacrifice and an enduring symbol of leadership by example. It reminds us all that true leaders are willing to lead from the front lines even when faced with great peril.
