EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Manvers Main Colliery, a historic coal mine in Wath upon Dearne, South Yorkshire. Taken in 1963 by renowned photographer Michael Walters for the NCB Coal Quarterly Magazine cover image, it showcases a British Coal worker standing proudly on a gantry above a rail truck. Manvers Main Colliery holds significant importance as it served as the regional headquarters for British Coal and housed laboratories. The site also boasted the largest industrial complex in Europe at that time - the Manvers coking plant. This colossus of industry closed its doors in 1981, followed by the closure of the colliery itself on March 25th, 1988. The photograph beautifully portrays both the grit and determination of these hardworking men who dedicated their lives to mining coal. It offers us a glimpse into an era when coal mining played a vital role in Britain's industrial landscape. Today, this once-thriving colliery has transformed into one of Europe's largest warehouses owned by Next Group. Additionally, national call centers such as O2, RSPCA, RBS, and EON have found their home here. As we admire this powerful image captured by Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , let us remember and honor those who toiled tirelessly underground to fuel our nation's progress during an era that shaped our history forever.
