Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1917

Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1917. Marie (1867-1934) and her husband Pierre Curie continued the work on radioactivity started by Henri Becquerel. In 1898, they discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Marie did most of the work of producing these elements, and to this day her notebooks are still too radioactive to use. She went on to become the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France, and continued her work after Pierres death in 1906. In 1903 the Curies shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel. Marie won a second Nobel Prize, for chemistry, in 1911. (Colourised black and white print)

Marie Curie, Polish-born French physicist, 1917 - A Trailblazer in Science

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures Marie Curie, a remarkable figure in the field of science during the early 20th century. Born in Poland in 1867 and later becoming a naturalized French citizen, Marie and her husband Pierre Curie embarked on groundbreaking research on radioactivity following Henri Becquerel's discoveries. In their pursuit, they unveiled two new elements - polonium and radium - with Marie taking charge of their production. The dedication to her work was unparalleled; even today, her notebooks remain too radioactive for safe handling. Undeterred by challenges, she became the first woman to earn a doctorate degree in France and continued her scientific endeavors after Pierre's untimely death. In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to physics, the Curies were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize alongside Becquerel in 1903. However, this was not Marie's only triumph as she went on to receive another Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1911. Marie Curie shattered gender barriers within academia and left an indelible mark on scientific history. Her portrait serves as a testament to her unwavering determination and brilliance that transcended borders. This colorized black-and-white print allows us to appreciate both the beauty of artistry and the significance of one woman's immense achievements.
