Market Place, Cornwall, c1780-1825. Creator: Thomas Rowlandson
Market Place, Cornwall, c1780-1825. " Market Place, Cornwall" is of the essence of Rowlandsons village-scene subjects. In it he achieves qualities of drawing and color not to be found in any contemporarys work. As a caricature artist, he lived before his time; popularity was his even during the period when his work followed the pattern of that of his contemporaries and before he had fully developed the idiosyncrasies of his unique individuality...He had no worldly ambitions; therefore, he suffered no great artistic losses, although several financial ones. He raised himself to such excellence in his art that by innate inclination and experience he reached the greatest heights. From " The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc. New York, 1947]

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of Thomas Rowlandson's village-scene subjects in "Market Place, Cornwall". Created between 1780 and 1825, this artwork showcases qualities of drawing and color that set it apart from contemporary works. Rowlandson was a caricature artist ahead of his time, enjoying popularity even when his style followed the patterns of his peers. However, he eventually developed unique idiosyncrasies that elevated him to artistic excellence. Rowlandson had no worldly ambitions but suffered several financial losses throughout his career. Nevertheless, he honed his craft to such perfection that he reached unparalleled heights through innate inclination and experience. This particular piece stands as a testament to his mastery. The bustling market scene depicted in the image transports viewers back to 18th-century Cornwall. Rows of charming houses line the streets while market stalls overflow with pottery and other wares for sale. The attention to detail is remarkable; every building exudes character and every person tells their own story. As we admire this work from the Albert H.
