Mauch Chunk and Mount Pisgah, 1872. View of steam locomotives and coal barges in the town of Mauch Chunk, the lower terminus of the Mauch Chunk and Summit railroad, Pennsylvania, USA. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by John J. Harley in 1872, showcases the picturesque town of Mauch Chunk and Mount Pisgah in Pennsylvania, USA. The image captures a bustling scene with steam locomotives and coal barges dominating the foreground. Mauch Chunk served as the lower terminus for the Mauch Chunk and Summit railroad, which was a gravity railway responsible for transporting coal to the head of the Lehigh Canal. The significance of this railway cannot be overstated; it was not only one of America's first operational railways but also boasted an impressive length capable of carrying paying passengers. Operating from 1828 until 1932, it played a vital role in facilitating trade by shipping coal downstream to the Delaware River. Harley's photograph perfectly encapsulates both industrial progress and natural beauty. The towering mountains surrounding Mauch Chunk provide a stunning backdrop against which this thriving transportation hub thrived. The intricate bridge structures spanning over waterways add an architectural charm to this already breathtaking landscape. This particular print is sourced from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in New York in 1872. It exemplifies how artistry can merge with geography to create visually striking depictions that offer glimpses into historical moments like these. Overall, Harley's photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity while simultaneously capturing nature's awe-inspiring grandeur - truly an invaluable piece showcasing both history and artistry at its finest.
