The Mayor of Casterbridge

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Thomas Hardy is a novel published in 1886, which tells the story of Michael Henchard, a man who makes a rash decision to sell his wife at a fair, and the consequences that follow. This scene from the novel was illustrated by Robert Barnes for "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper" in Volume 33, January to June, 1886. In this engraving, titled "Lucetta's eyes were straight upon the spectacle of the uncanny revel," we see a group of people gathered at a country fair in England during the Victorian era. The focus of the image is on the intrigued expression of a woman, identified as Lucetta, who is intently watching the spectacle unfolding before her. She is dressed in the fashion of the time, with a high collar, long sleeves, and a voluminous skirt. The uncanny revel to which Lucetta refers is not clear from the image alone, but it is mentioned in the novel as a mysterious and intriguing event that takes place at the fair. The scene is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as the crowd around Lucetta leans in to get a better look at the spectacle. The use of chiaroscuro, or strong contrasts between light and dark, adds to the drama and intrigue of the image. Robert Barnes was a prominent English illustrator of the 19th century, known for his detailed and evocative engravings. This print, which captures the essence of Hardy's novel, is a testament to Barnes' skill in bringing literary scenes to life through his art. The image invites us to delve deeper into the story of "The Mayor of Casterbridge," and to ponder the mysteries and complexities of human nature that it explores.
