The Mayor of Casterbridge

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1886, which tells the story of Michael Henchard, a man who makes a rash promise to sell his wife at a fair, only to regret it deeply later. This scene from the novel was beautifully illustrated by Robert Barnes for "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper" in January to June, 1886. In this engraving, we see a tense and dramatic moment from the novel, as the mayor, Michael Henchard, stands before Elizabeth-Jane, the woman he once sold, and her husband, Farfrae. Henchard, with a look of guilt and despair, interrogates Elizabeth-Jane, asking her, "Did you do it or didn't you?" The question refers to her supposed infidelity, which Henchard believes would give him the right to take her back. The Victorian-era clothing in this print is a testament to the fashion of the time. Henchard wears a formal suit with a top hat, while Elizabeth-Jane is dressed in a modest, high-necked dress with a long skirt. Farfrae, standing behind Elizabeth-Jane, is dressed in a more casual, workman-like outfit. The setting is a rustic, country location, with a thatched roof and wooden beams visible in the background. This print, created by Robert Barnes, is a stunning representation of the novel's themes of regret, guilt, and the consequences of rash actions. It is a fascinating glimpse into the fashion, culture, and literature of the 19th century, and a reminder of the enduring power of Thomas Hardy's storytelling.
