EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the Illustrated London News in 1850, a significant gathering takes place in Willis's Rooms, St. James's, London, for the purpose of erecting a memorial to honor the late Sir Robert Peel. The esteemed attendees, including His Grace the Duke of Wellington and Viscount Hardinge, are deeply engrossed in the proceedings. Sir Robert Peel, a renowned British statesman, had tragically passed away on 29 June 1850, following an unfortunate accident while riding on Constitution Hill in London. Peel's friends and admirers came together to perpetuate the memory of his exceptional talents, tireless public service, and virtuous private life. The Duke of Wellington, an iconic figure in his own right, presided over the meeting, with the right hon. Earl of Aberdeen seated to his left and Viscount Hardinge next to him. The Duke reads the first resolution aloud to the assembly, marking the beginning of the fundraising effort to create an enduring tribute to Sir Robert Peel. The room was filled with men of influence and power, representing the old boys network or old boys club of the time. The subscriptions collected during this meeting exceeded £1600, a substantial sum in the 19th century, reflecting the profound impact Sir Robert Peel had on the political landscape of Britain. The engraving captures the essence of the moment, with the Duke of Wellington and Viscount Hardinge intently listening to the proceedings. This poignant image serves as a testament to the power of community and the enduring legacy of Sir Robert Peel.
