The monument was raised in memory of Nolan, who tragically fell at the head of the Light Cavalry Brigade during the Charge at Balaclava on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War. Nolan, who was 36 years old at the time of his death, had served on the staff of General Sir George Berkeley in India and was also an Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Airey, the Quartermaster-General to the Forces in the Crimea. The inscription on the memorial reads, "In Memory of Lewis Edward Nolan, Captain in the 15th or King's Hussars, And A.D.C. to Major-General Airey, Quartermaster-General to the Forces In the Crimea. He Fell at the Head of The Light Cavalry Brigade In the Charge at Balaclava, On the 25th October, 1854, Aged 36."
