EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Michel Ney, a renowned French soldier who played a significant role in the Napoleonic Wars. Taken in 1817, it portrays Ney's commanding presence and unwavering determination. Ney, born in 1769, rose through the ranks to become a Marshal of France in 1804. His military prowess was evident as he led the French army with great success at notable battles such as Friedland (1807), Borodino, and Smolensk (1812). Napoleon himself recognized Ney's exceptional leadership skills by bestowing upon him the title Prince of the Moskwa. The image also symbolizes Ney's pivotal role during Napoleon's infamous retreat from Moscow. As commander of the rearguard, he displayed immense bravery and resilience amidst challenging circumstances. However, his fate took a tragic turn when he commanded the French center at Waterloo in 1815. Following their defeat, Ney was accused of treason and ultimately executed. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both Ney's remarkable military career and his untimely demise. It encapsulates an era defined by intense conflict and strategic warfare that shaped Europe during the early nineteenth century. As we gaze upon this monochrome portrait captured by an unknown creator, we are transported back to a time when courage on the battlefield held immeasurable significance. Michel Ney remains etched into history as one of France's most distinguished soldiers—a testament to his unwavering loyalty to country
