The image, created by an unknown artist, depicts a solemn yet celebratory moment as Mr. Miller, newly elevated to the degree of Serjeant-at-Law, is bid farewell by his peers in the hallowed halls of Middle Temple. The scene is set in the grand Middle Temple Hall, illuminated by the soft glow of gas lighting, where the air is thick with anticipation and tradition. Mr. Miller, dressed in full Court attire, stands before the representative officer of the Bench, who reads out his patent of office and congratulates him on his achievement. In accordance with ancient usage, the learned Serjeant is presented with a purse of crown pieces. As Mr. Miller makes a few remarks in reply, the Bench and other members of the Inn, dressed in their finest, escort him to the door of the Hall. Each member shakes his hand and offers their well-wishes as he retires to Serjeants' Inn, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in his legal career. With its intricate details and atmospheric lighting, this print is a testament to the rich history and traditions of the legal profession in Britain during the 19th century.
