The Milton Vase, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Milton Vase, 1857. This interesting work of sculpture attracted much admiration at the last exhibition of the Royal Academy. The vase is feet 5 inches in height. The subjects illustrate "Paradise Lost". The panel engraved shows Michael leading Adam and Eve out of Paradise; the fiery sword waving behind them, and the cherubim guarding the place: "Haste thee, and from the Paradise of God Drive out the sinful pair. All terror hide, If patiently thy bidding they obey: Dismiss them not disconsolate. Book II". The handle is supported by masks of Sin and Death, with foliage of the deadly nightshade. Under the lip are masks of Envy, Hatred, Fear, and Despair, with foliage of wild plants. The entire design is of classic character. The Vase is the joint production of two rising young artists, T. and W. J. Wills, of Harrison-street, Gray's-inn- road. We are glad to see artistic skill applied to works of this class'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Milton Vase, created in 1857, is an intriguing sculpture that captured the attention of many at the Royal Academy's last exhibition. Measuring just 5 inches in height, this exquisite work of art showcases scenes from John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost." The panel engraved on the vase depicts Michael leading Adam and Eve out of Paradise, with the fiery sword of God waving behind them and cherubim guarding the entrance. The biblical passage inscribed reads, "Haste thee, and from the Paradise of God Drive out the sinful pair. All terror hide, If patiently thy bidding they obey: Dismiss them not disconsolate." (Book II) The handle of the vase is supported by masks of Sin and Death, adorned with foliage of the deadly nightshade. Below the masks are masks of Envy, Hatred, Fear, and Despair, accompanied by wild plants. The overall design exudes a classic character, reflecting the timeless themes of Milton's poem. The Milton Vase is a collaborative effort between two rising young artists, Thomas and William J. Wills, based in Harrison-street, Gray's-inn-road. It is a testament to their artistic skill and their ability to bring literary masterpieces to life through sculpture. We are delighted to witness the application of such talent to works of this nature.
