EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Miss Rita Jolivet, a renowned English actress of the early 20th century. Taken in 1903 by Campbell & Gray, this image captures Jolivet's elegance and beauty. Known for her silent film performances from 1914 to 1926, she appeared in only a limited number of films during her career. Tragically, Jolivet was aboard the RMS Lusitania when it fell victim to a German U-boat attack on May 7,1915. This event marked one of the most devastating maritime tragedies during World War I. Despite this harrowing experience, Jolivet continued to make significant contributions to the entertainment industry. In this portrait, we see Miss Rita Jolivet dressed in traditional costume with an air of sophistication. Her hand rests confidently on her hip as she gazes directly at the camera with poise and grace. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intensity to her portrayal. The photograph is sourced from Penroses Pictorial Annual 1903-4 edited by William Gamble and published by A. W. Penrose & Co. , London. It offers us a glimpse into the world of early cinema and pays tribute to an extraordinary actress whose life was forever shaped by tragedy but whose talent continues to be celebrated today.
