Missile, Surface-to-Air, Lark, 1944. Creator: Convair
The Lark was an early U.S. Navy surface-to-air, liquid-propellant, rocket-propelled missile built by the Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft Corporation, and was usually launched from the decks of ships with the help of solid propellant boosters. It carried a 100-pound warhead and had a range of about 38 miles. The design of the Lark began in 1944, but it was not developed in time for use in World War II. It was used extensively from 1946-1950 as a test missile, providing valuable experience to U.S. military personnel in the handling and deployment of missiles. Some flights were made at sea. The Lark was also the first U.S. surface-to-air missile ever to intercept a moving air target. This object was donated to the Smithsonian in 1971 by the U.S. Navy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Missile, Surface-to-Air, Lark, a remarkable creation by Convair in 1944. As an early U. S. Navy surface-to-air missile, the Lark was a liquid-propellant and rocket-powered weapon designed to be launched from ships using solid propellant boosters. With its impressive capabilities, including a 100-pound warhead and a range of approximately 38 miles, this missile played a crucial role in shaping American military history. Although the design process began during World War II, it wasn't completed in time for active use. However, from 1946 to 1950, the Lark served as an invaluable test missile that provided essential experience to U. S. military personnel regarding handling and deployment techniques. Notably, it became the first U. S. surface-to-air missile ever to successfully intercept a moving air target—an extraordinary achievement. Donated to the Smithsonian Institution by the U. S. Navy in 1971, this object represents not only technological advancement but also symbolizes America's dedication to scientific exploration and national defense throughout history. The central section of fuselage steel combined with fins made of fiberglass and rigid styrofoam exemplify innovative construction methods employed during that era. As we admire this artifact at the National Air and Space Museum—a renowned educational institution—we are reminded of how far technology has progressed since then while appreciating the heritage left behind by Convair's groundbreaking work on missiles and rockets during mid-20th century America.
