Model, Lunar Probe, Ranger. Creator: Unknown
Model, Lunar Probe, Ranger. This is a 1/24th scale model of Ranger 1 and 2, the spacecraft series that sought to gather knowledge about the Moon in the first yearsof the space age, and which gave scientists their first close look at the lunar surface. Rangers 1 and 2 were test missions in Earth orbit, although neither of them were successful in 1959 and 1960. Later versions of this spacecraft, Rangers 7, 8, and 9, were successful in the middle part of the 1960s in reaching the Moon and returning imagery of its surface. Those pictures revealed details that could not be seen through telescopes on Earth. Transferred from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 1/24th scale model of the Model, Lunar Probe, Ranger. Created by an unknown artist, this model represents the groundbreaking spacecraft series that played a crucial role in unraveling the mysteries of our Moon during the early years of space exploration. Specifically, it depicts Ranger 1 and 2, which were test missions conducted in Earth's orbit between 1959 and 1960. Although these initial attempts were not successful, they paved the way for future versions of the spacecraft such as Rangers 7,8, and 9. These later models achieved remarkable triumphs in the mid-1960s by successfully reaching our lunar neighbor and capturing unprecedented imagery of its surface. The photographs obtained from these missions provided scientists with invaluable insights into lunar topography that had previously eluded telescopic observations from Earth. Acquired from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), this historic artifact now resides within America's prestigious National Air and Space Museum (NASM). Constructed using metal, plastic paper adhesive paint materials, this prototype exemplifies both scientific innovation and artistic craftsmanship. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured during a pivotal era in human history, let us appreciate how far we have come in exploring our solar system. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about space travel while honoring those who dedicated their lives to expanding our knowledge of the cosmos.
