Model, T-38 Training Aircraft, 1980s. Creator: Northrop Corporation
Model, T-38 Training Aircraft, 1980s. This scale 1:40 Northrop T-38 training jet model belonged to American astronaut and physicist Dr. Sally K. Ride. NASA kept a small fleet of T-38s for astronaut training, proficiency, and transportation, and for use as chase planes. As a mission specialist astronaut, not a pilot, Ride was expected to spend fifteen hours a month aloft in the backseat of a T-38, practicing navigation and communication procedures while conditioning herself for high performance flight. Ride, who had previously flown only on commercial airliners, so enjoyed flying in the T-38 that she took lessons and earned her pilot license. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she flew on the STS-7 shuttle mission in 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a scale 1:40 model of the Northrop T-38 Training Aircraft from the 1980s. This particular model belonged to the esteemed American astronaut and physicist, Dr. Sally K. Ride. The T-38 was an integral part of NASA's fleet, utilized for astronaut training, proficiency, transportation, and as chase planes. As a mission specialist astronaut with no prior piloting experience, Ride spent fifteen hours each month in the backseat of a T-38 honing her navigation and communication skills while preparing herself for high-performance flight. Her passion for flying grew so strong that she went on to take lessons and obtained her pilot license. Sally Ride made history in 1983 when she became the first American woman to venture into space during the STS-7 shuttle mission. Prior to this groundbreaking achievement, Ride had only experienced air travel aboard commercial airliners. This remarkable print not only captures a significant piece of aviation history but also symbolizes Dr. Sally K. Ride's determination and trailblazing spirit as she shattered barriers in space exploration for women everywhere. Displayed at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), this plastic model plane serves as a testament to both scientific institutions like NASA and Smithsonian Institution's commitment to preserving our rich aerospace heritage.
