Modern house in Hampstead, (1951). Creator: Shirley Markham

Modern house in Hampstead, (1951). Modernist house at 66 Frognal, Hampstead, London, designed by Colin Lucas of Connell, Ward and Lucas, and built in 1938. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a modernist house in Hampstead, London, captured by the talented Shirley Markham in 1951. Designed by Colin Lucas of Connell, Ward and Lucas and built in 1938, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to the innovative design principles of its time. Shirley Markham, an accomplished artist herself, studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art under the guidance of renowned writer Mervyn Peake. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, Markham developed her unique style which shines through her work. Markham's artistic journey took her beyond London's borders as she explored the Dolomite Mountains in Italy and sketched classical buildings in Rome. Her talent for graphic design led her to produce book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programmes. Sadly though promising career-wise as an illustrator with immense potential ahead of her; societal expectations prevailed during that era when middle-class women were expected to prioritize family life over professional pursuits. Consequently, after getting married in 1957 Markham chose to put aside her illustration aspirations. For years thereafter Markham's remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when it is finally being published for all to appreciate. This print serves as a poignant reminder not only of Markham's exceptional talent but also sheds light on the challenges faced by creative women during that period.
