EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Marble Monument to Captain James Armar Butler and his two brothers, Henry Thomas Butler and George Butler, located in the parish church of Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland. Erected in 1856, the monument stands as a poignant tribute to the brave officers of the British Army who lost their lives during the Crimean War. Captain James Armar Butler is remembered for his heroic defense of Silistria, while Captain Henry Thomas Butler fell gallantly fighting at the Battle of Inkerman. Tragically, Captain George Butler succumbed to fever in Bombay just four months earlier, in December 1854. All three brothers, sons of the esteemed Lieutenant-General the Hon. Henry Edward Butler, lost their lives within a six-month period while serving their country. The monument was designed by Mr. Gaffin and erected at the sole expense of their father, a testament to his deep pride and love for his sons. The inscription on the monument serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men during the Crimean War. The photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1856, provides a glimpse into the past, offering a poignant reminder of the human cost of warfare.
