Monument to John Wesley, to be erected at Epworth, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Monument to John Wesley, to be erected at Epworth, 1856. Memorial to...to the founder of Methodism...the good people of the town of Epworth, in Lincolnshire (Wesley's birthplace), propose to commemorate his excellence by the erection of a statue "by a National Penny Subscription", so as to afford all classes the means of participating in the good work...Mr. Tilbury, the artist, has designed the intended monument, which is exceedingly appropriate. The statue of Wesley, 7 feet 9 inches in height, is placed upon a square stone basement...Upon this basement rises a Gothic floriated baldachino, or canopy, underneath which is, of course, the figure. The attitude of Wesley is indeed expressive, holding the Bible in one hand. He is represented as exhorting the people with that earnestness and truth which so distinguished his life...The whole is surrounded by an appropriate palisading'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the proposed Monument to John Wesley, which was intended to be erected at his birthplace, Epworth, in Lincolnshire, in 1856. The good people of Epworth sought to commemorate the founder of Methodism through a National Penny Subscription, allowing all classes to participate in the project. The statue, designed by Mr. Tilbury, stands at a height of 7 feet 9 inches and is placed upon a square stone basement. Above the basement, a Gothic floriated baldachino, or canopy, rises, beneath which is the figure of Wesley. He is depicted with earnestness and truth, holding the Bible in one hand, as he exhorts the people. The monument is surrounded by an appropriate palisading. The design by Mr. Tilbury is exceedingly appropriate, capturing the essence of Wesley's life and ministry. The Monument to John Wesley was a testament to the enduring impact of his teachings and the deep respect and admiration he continued to inspire in the people of Epworth and beyond.
