EDITORS COMMENTS
This monument, located in Bombay Cathedral, is a tribute to the memory of Major Eldred Pottinger, C.B., a brave and esteemed soldier of the Bombay Regiment of Artillery. The monument, sculpted by Baily in 1850, was erected as a symbol of the deep admiration and respect held by his friends in the Presidency for his exceptional military character and conduct as a man. Major Pottinger's valor was most notably displayed during the defense of Herat, where his successful leadership and wise counsel were instrumental in British victories against formidable adversaries. However, after years of unrelenting public service, Major Pottinger's health began to deteriorate, and he sought a change of climate to recover. Tragically, he contracted a malignant fever while en route to England via China, and he passed away on November 13, 1843, at the young age of 32. The inscription on the monument reads, "To the Memory of Major Eldred Pottinger of the Bombay Regiment of Artillery, In token of the admiration and respect in which his character as a soldier, and conduct as a man, are held by his friends in the Presidency." This poignant tribute serves as a reminder of Major Pottinger's significant contributions to the British military and the enduring impact he left on those who knew him.
