EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in history, showcasing the Moorish cavalry under Lusius Quietus engaged in a fierce battle against the Dacians. The image is a detailed section of Trajan's Column, an awe-inspiring monument located in Rome's Trajan Forum. Constructed in 113 AD by Apollodorus of Damascus on the orders of the Senate, this magnificent column stands tall near the Quirinal Hill, just north of the Roman Forum. Its low relief carvings depict Emperor Trajan's two campaigns in Dacia (modern-day Romania). However, it is worth noting that over time, St Peter replaced Trajan atop this iconic structure back in 1588. The illustration itself originates from "The World's History: The Mediterranean Nations" authored by Dr H F Helmolt and published by William Heinemann in London during 1902. It showcases not only exceptional artistry but also provides valuable insights into ancient warfare and cultural exchanges between different nations. In this particular scene, we witness brave soldiers on horseback engaging their enemies with valor and determination. The vibrant colors bring life to every detail - from the majestic horses charging forward to each warrior displaying their strength and skill amidst chaotic surroundings. This print serves as a testament to human resilience throughout history while reminding us of our collective heritage and shared experiences across borders and centuries.
