EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is taken from a leaf of the Shahnama, an illuminated and illustrated manuscript of Firdawsi's epic poem, "The Book of Kings." The manuscript was commissioned by Qawam al-Dawlah wa-al-Din Hasan, the vizier to the Inju governor in Fars province, in the year 741 AH/AD 1341. The text is written in black Nasta'liq script, with chapter headings in red, blue, and black Ta'liq script. The manuscript's dispersal occurred in the early 14th century AH/AD 20th century, and currently over half of its leaves are known to be extant, with some housed in public and private collections. The illustrations of the Shahnama have been linked to production in Shiraz during the 14th century. In this image, we see several mounted warriors, dressed in suits of armor and riding horses, engaged in battle. The intricate details of the armor, the horses' manes and tails, and the riders' facial expressions all show the masterful craftsmanship of the artist.
