The movers and seconders of the addresses in both Houses of Parliament: Lord Richard Grosvenor, 1864 Creator: Unknown

The movers and seconders of the addresses in both Houses of Parliament: Lord Richard Grosvenor, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by John and Charles Watkins. 'Being a Liberal in politics, and professing to be an adherent of the Government of Lord Palmerston, he [The Right Hon. Richard de Aquila Grosvenor, by courtesy Lord Richard Grosvenor], on the death of Mr. Mostyn, in May, 1861, was selected as a candidate for the representation of the county of Flint, and during his canvass received the personal support of Mr. Gladstone, who is connected by marriage with that part of Wales. His recorded opinions on politics state that, while advocating a liberal policy, he is in favour of the continued union of Church and State, but will support any measure which will relieve Dissenters from church rates, failing which he is prepared to vote for the total abolition of those rates. Being, in every sense of the term, a young member, his Lordship had achieved no prominency in the House until he was called upon, in pursuance of established practice, as connected with, and therefore in a certain sense representing, the landed aristocracy in the third estate of the realm, to move the Address in answer to the Speech from the Throne on the present occasion'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of British politics - the movers and seconders of the addresses in both Houses of Parliament, featuring Lord Richard Grosvenor in 1864. Lord Richard Grosvenor, a Liberal politician and supporter of Lord Palmerston's government, was chosen as a candidate for the county of Flint after the death of Mr. Mostyn in 1861. In this engraving from a photograph by John and Charles Watkins, we see Lord Richard Grosvenor fulfilling his duty as a young member representing the landed aristocracy by moving the Address in response to the Speech from the Throne. Despite his relative youth and lack of prominence in Parliament at that time, he garnered support from influential figures like Mr. Gladstone. Lord Richard Grosvenor's political views were clear - advocating for liberal policies while supporting the union of Church and State but also willing to relieve Dissenters from church rates or abolish them entirely if necessary. This image not only showcases an important parliamentary tradition but also provides insight into Lord Richard Grosvenor's beliefs and values as a politician during this era.
