Mr. Patterson and His Apparatus, 1900. Mr George W Patterson of Chicago was the first person to put on displays of juggling with electrically lit clubs, powered by a storage battery which he designed and built himself. The battery evoked much comment from eminent electricians...it weighs 35lb, has thirty-two volts normal, and a capacity of ten amperes at about twenty-five volts...To give a display, the room is darkened, and Mr. Patterson, taking his stand in front of the audience, turns on the current and swings the clubs with the most wonderful results. From " The Strand Magazine, an illustrated monthly", Volume XIX - January to June 1900, edited by George Newnes. [George Newnes Ltd, London, 1900]

EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time to the turn of the 20th century and witness a truly electrifying spectacle captured in this vintage photo print. Meet Mr. George W Patterson, an inventive showman from Chicago who astounded audiences with his groundbreaking apparatus. In an era when electricity was still a marvel, Mr. Patterson's contraption stood out as a testament to human ingenuity. Designed and built by his own hands, his storage battery weighed a hefty 35 pounds but possessed remarkable capabilities - generating thirty-two volts normally, with a capacity of ten amperes at approximately twenty-five volts. To showcase his invention's prowess, Mr. Patterson would dim the lights within the room and take center stage before an eager audience. With a flick of a switch, electric current coursed through his clubs - each adorned with glowing bulbs - transforming them into mesmerizing beacons that defied gravity as they danced through the air. This extraordinary display garnered attention not only from captivated spectators but also from esteemed electricians who marveled at its technical brilliance. The photograph itself hails from "The Strand Magazine" edited by George Newnes in London during that period. Transport yourself to an era where science met entertainment, where inventors like Mr. Patterson pushed boundaries to create unforgettable experiences for their audiences. This image serves as both a window into history and an homage to those pioneers who dared to blend technology with artistry on stages across America.
