EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century Myddelton Biddulph Armorial Medallion, hailing from Wales and created by renowned English architect and designer AWN Pugin around 1846, is a breathtaking example of intricate craftsmanship and artistic innovation. The medallion, which measures approximately 12 inches in diameter, is a masterpiece of appliqué and embroidery, featuring a richly detailed armorial crest encircled by an elaborate border. The crest, which represents the Myddelton Biddulph family, is embroidered with silk and silk-wrapped cotton in paper-padded satin stitches, while the border is adorned with appliqued medallions of silk satin weave and padded linen plain weave. The medallions are further embellished with wool, silk, and cotton, and tubular braided cord, all meticulously stitched in satin single satin split and stem stitches. The background of the medallion is a vibrant, richly colored fabric, while the glass eye at the center of the crest is appliqued with silk plain weave and supplementary pile warps forming cut solid velvet. The intricate design and execution of this piece showcase Pugin's exceptional talent as a designer and his deep understanding of various textile techniques. This exquisite artifact is a testament to the artistic and cultural heritage of Britain and Europe during the 19th century. It is currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
