Napoleon and General Kleber on the expedition to Egypt, 1798, (c1835). Artist: Francois Georgin
Napoleon and General Kleber on the expedition to Egypt, 1798, (c1835). The French attempted to invade and expel the ruling Mamelukes in the Battle of the Pyramids. More than 5000 of the Mameluke force were killed or wounded, while Bonapartes Army of the Orient lost 300 men. The Pyramids won Lower Egypt for France. General Jean-Baptiste Kleber was given the honour of taking command of all French forces when Bonaparte returned to France. Kleber held together his isolated troops in the face of an increasingly hostile native population and a large Ottoman army. He won a key action at Heliopolis and retook Cairo but, when on the verge of stabilising the situation, was assassinated by a knife-wielding fanatic

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Napoleon and General Kleber on the expedition to Egypt, 1798" captures a significant moment in history. Painted by Francois Georgin in 1835, it depicts the French attempt to invade and expel the ruling Mamelukes during the Battle of the Pyramids. In this scene, we see General Jean-Baptiste Kleber standing alongside Napoleon Bonaparte I. They are surrounded by an encampment of soldiers and camels, symbolizing their military presence in North Africa. The palm trees and Sphinx in the background add a touch of exoticism to the image. This print serves as a reminder of France's imperialistic ambitions during this time period. Despite facing hostility from both native populations and Ottoman forces, Kleber managed to hold his troops together and achieve key victories such as retaking Cairo. Tragically, just when stability seemed within reach, Kleber was assassinated by a knife-wielding fanatic. His death marked a significant loss for France's military efforts in Egypt. Francois Georgin skillfully captured this historical moment through his wood engraving technique. The use of color adds depth to the composition while highlighting important details like clothing and military uniforms. Overall, this print is not only visually captivating but also tells a compelling story about war, imperialism, and sacrifice during the Napoleonic era.
