EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Napoleon II, Duke of Reichstadt, King of Rome. Born in 1811 as the son of Napoleon Bonaparte I and his second wife Marie Louise, he was destined for greatness but never had the chance to rule France. In this portrait, we see a young man with an air of regality and determination. Although briefly titled Emperor of the French in 1815 after his father's fall from power, Napoleon II's reign was cut short by tuberculosis. He tragically passed away at the tender age of 21, leaving behind a legacy that could have been. The artist behind this masterpiece remains unknown; however, their skill is evident in capturing every intricate detail and emotion on Napoleon II's face. The use of color adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing history to life before our eyes. This particular photograph comes from "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring cigarette-card portrait miniatures showcasing figures from world history over four centuries. Published in Germany in 1933, it serves as a testament to how even decades later people were still fascinated by the enigmatic figure that was Napoleon II. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are reminded not only of one man's untimely demise but also how fleeting power can be. It serves as a poignant reminder that even those who seem destined for greatness may never get their chance to shine.
