Nell Fis with a Finnish Friend Tika, 1924. Creator: Unknown
Nell Fis with a Finnish Friend Tika, 1924. The "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony was created in 1921. It was organized by American workers, who took on the obligation of inviting from the United States and Western Europe some eight thousand skilled workers and specialists to industrialize the Kuzbass. The Soviet government turned over to the colonists a number of Kemerovo mine shafts and an unfinished coking plant. To recruit volunteers to work in Siberia, a "Kuzbass Bureau" was opened in the middle of New York City, and an information bulletin began to be published in the United States. Between January 1922 and December 1923, however, only 566 persons arrived for work in the Kuzbass. The colonists included emigrants from America, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and other countries as well. Kemerovo Oblast Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time - Nell Fis with her Finnish friend Tika in 1924. The image is a testament to the unique history of the "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony, established in 1921 by American workers. Tasked with inviting skilled workers and specialists from the United States and Western Europe to industrialize Siberia, the colonists faced challenges in recruiting volunteers.
Despite these obstacles, Nell Fis and Tika stand proudly together, representing the diverse group of colonists who made their way to Kemerovo Oblast. Their friendship transcends borders and cultures, showcasing the spirit of unity that prevailed in this remote corner of Russia.
The black and white composition adds a timeless quality to the scene, emphasizing the enduring bond between these two women. Nell's stylish coat and woolly hat contrast beautifully with Tika's traditional Finnish attire, creating a striking visual contrast.
