New Associates of the Royal Academy: Mr. Alma Tadema, A.R.A. 1876. Creator: Unknown
New Associates of the Royal Academy: Mr. Alma Tadema, A.R.A. 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Fradelle and Marshall of Regent-street. This distinguished artist, who, after acquiring a Continental reputation, has become naturalised among us (having received letters of denization from the Queen in 1873), was born at Dromyp, in the Netherlands...He received his artistic education in the Royal Academy of Antwerp, and completed his studies under Baron H. Leys. The influence of that Belgian master is evident in Mr. Alma Tadema's works, both as regards colouring and fondness for archaeological detail; but instead of confining himself to the pictorial revival of Medieval Flemish life, the living artist has "restored, " so to speak, the classical glories of Greece and Rome, and the still earlier civilisation of ancient Egypt, and that with a learning and vraisemblance which have not been surpassed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "New Associates of the Royal Academy: Mr. Alma Tadema, A.R.A. 1876," showcases the esteemed Dutch painter, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who gained both a Continental reputation and British citizenship, having received letters of denization from Queen Victoria in 1873. Born in Dromyp, Netherlands, Alma-Tadema received his artistic education at the Royal Academy of Antwerp under the tutelage of Baron H. Leys. The influence of his Belgian master is evident in Alma-Tadema's works, as seen in his meticulous attention to coloring and affinity for archaeological detail. However, unlike his Belgian predecessors who focused on the pictorial revival of Medieval Flemish life, Alma-Tadema instead "restored" the classical glories of Greece and Rome, as well as the ancient civilizations of Egypt, with a level of learning and authenticity that has not been surpassed. This photograph, an engraving from a photograph by Fradelle and Marshall of Regent-street, captures Alma-Tadema in formal attire, embodying the elegance and sophistication of a true master of classical art.
