New Betting Room, Newmarket, 1845. Creator: Unknown
New Betting Room, Newmarket, 1845. Racegoers at Newmarket in Suffolk. The New Betting Room was instituted in the autumn of last year for the accommodation of those visitors to Newmarket who had previously, and with good reason, made loud complaint of the absence of such a desideratum. The New Betting Room stands on the site of Messrs. Weatherbys old offices, which was adapted to its present purpose by Mr. George Tattersall, of Pall-mall. It immediately adjoins the Jockey Club Rooms...and is attended by all the visitors to Newmarket - habitual and casual - due care being taken by a responsible committee to exclude the black sheep from the fold. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1845, capturing a moment in history at the New Betting Room in Newmarket, Suffolk. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but their talent for freezing time is evident. Racegoers from all walks of life gather here, drawn by their shared passion for horseracing. This newly established betting room was a long-awaited addition to Newmarket, providing much-needed accommodation for visitors who had previously voiced their discontent. It now stands proudly on the site where Messrs. Weatherbys old offices once stood. The architectural beauty of the building reflects the neoclassical style that was popular during this era. Mr. George Tattersall of Pall-mall skillfully adapted it to its current purpose, ensuring comfort and convenience for all those who enter its doors. Adjacent to the prestigious Jockey Club Rooms, this betting room has become an integral part of Newmarket's vibrant horse racing scene. A responsible committee diligently screens attendees to ensure only reputable individuals are welcomed into its midst. As we gaze upon this engraving from "Illustrated London News" we can almost feel the excitement and anticipation that fills the air outside this establishment. Horses gallop nearby while spectators eagerly place their bets and engage in lively discussions about upcoming races. This photograph serves as a window into a bygone era when horse racing held immense cultural significance in Britain. It reminds us of our enduring fascination with these magnificent animals and how they continue to captivate our hearts even today.
