New Church of Il Santissimo Redentore, at Rome, (exterior), 1856. View of...the Church of II Santissimo Redentore, now in course of erection from the designs of [English architect] Mr. George G. [sic] Wigley...The Redemptorist Fathers (an order founded at the end of the last century, by the well-known theological writer, St. Alphonsus Liguori) have lately purchased the Villa Caserta, to make it their head-quarters in the Eternal City, and have added to the existing buildings the church which is the subject of our Illustration. The general dimensions of the church are 200 Roman palms (146 feet) in length, by 70 palms (51 feet) in width, and 70 palms in height. The estimated cost is 18, 000 Roman scudi (about £4000). The style of the church is an adaptation of Italian Gothic, of a very simple character, studied from mediaeval buildings at Subiaco and other places in the neighbourhood of Rome'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the exterior of the New Church of Il Santissimo Redentore in Rome, as it appeared in 1856 during its construction phase. The church, now a significant landmark in the Eternal City, was designed by English architect George G. Wigley for the Redemptorist Fathers, an order founded in the late 18th century by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, a renowned theological writer. The Redemptorist Fathers had recently acquired the Villa Caserta to establish their headquarters in Rome and decided to add a church to the existing buildings. The church's general dimensions were impressive, measuring 200 Roman palms (approximately 146 feet) in length, 70 palms (around 51 feet) in width, and 70 palms (roughly 51 feet) in height. The estimated cost for the construction was 18,000 Roman scudi, equivalent to about £4000. The architectural style of the church was an adaptation of Italian Gothic, featuring a simple yet elegant design inspired by mediaeval buildings in the Subiaco region and other areas near Rome. The church's construction was a testament to the Redemptorist Fathers' commitment to creating a place of worship that would reflect their spiritual values and blend seamlessly with the rich architectural history of Rome. This photograph, taken in 1856, captures the beauty and grandeur of the New Church of Il Santissimo Redentore as it rose from the ground, offering a glimpse into the architectural and religious history of Rome during that era.
