New Church of St. Saviour, Warwick-Road, Paddington - the Chancel, 1856. Creator: Unknown
New Church of St. Saviour, Warwick-Road, Paddington [in west London] - the Chancel, 1856. Interior view of church in...the adapted Gothic style...the architect has dispensed with side-aisles, clerestory, columns, &c, and formed a hall or auditorium, with handsome open timber roof and windows, the tracery of which is Second Pointed or Decorated, slightly inclining to flamboyant...The chancel is, more correctly, according to the ancient model...The reredos, by Mr. Farmer, is of Caen stone, richly carved, having columns of serpentine marble...The pulpit is a handsome piece of work, richly carved in oak...Great credit is due to the architect, Mr. Thomas Little, of Northumberland-street for the manner in which he has succeeded in uniting pleasing forms and correct details with what is really useful in a parish church, capable of containing 1760 persons'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the chancel of the New Church of St. Saviour, located on Warwick-Road in Paddington, west London, as it appeared in 1856. The church, designed in the adapted Gothic style, deviated from traditional church architecture by eliminating side-aisles, clerestory, columns, and other conventional elements. Instead, the architect, Thomas Little, created a spacious hall or auditorium, boasting an impressive open timber roof and windows adorned with Second Pointed or Decorated tracery, which slightly leaned towards the flamboyant style. The chancel, more accurately reflecting the ancient model, is situated at the eastern end of the church. Notable features of the chancel include the reredos, crafted by Mr. Farmer, which is made of Caen stone and intricately carved with serpentine marble columns. The pulpit, also a striking piece, is richly carved in oak. Thomas Little's design for the New Church of St. Saviour was praised for its ability to harmoniously blend pleasing forms and correct details with functionality. The church was capable of accommodating up to 1760 people, making it a significant addition to the Paddington community. This photograph offers a glimpse into the architectural innovation and craftsmanship that defined this remarkable place of worship during the mid-19th century.
