EDITORS COMMENTS
The new headgear at Kilnhurst Colliery, South Yorkshire, 1957. This print by artist Michael Walters takes us back to a significant moment in the history of coal mining in England. The image showcases the construction of the impressive new headgear at Kilnhurst Colliery near Rotherham. Originally established in 1859, this pit played a vital role in fueling Britain's industrial revolution. Operated by J&J Charlsworth and Co until 1924, it later changed hands and was acquired by Stuart and Lloyd Ltd along with its associated brickworks. The photograph captures not only the physical structure but also the spirit of an era defined by hard work and determination. It symbolizes the resilience of those who toiled underground, extracting coal that powered industries across the country. Sadly, both the brickworks and colliery have since ceased operations. The brickworks closed its doors for good in 1975, while mining activities came to an end in 1989. However, this historic site has been given new life as it was redeveloped into industrial units. Through this evocative image captured by Michael Walters' lens, we are reminded of a time when coal mining shaped communities and fueled progress throughout Britain. It serves as a poignant tribute to all those who dedicated their lives to this demanding industry.
