New Pictures in the National Gallery - "Christ Driving the Money-Changers out of the Temple" - painted by Bassano, 1856. In the picture before us, which was presented to the National Gallery by Philip L. Hinds, Esq. we have a fair sample of [Bassano's] powers and his peculiar predilections. Amidst the confused crowd of money-brokers, cattle, dogs, and dealers in live-stock, we recognise none of those sublimer attributes usually aimed at in the treatment of sacred subjects. We cannot conclude our notice of this picture without animadverting upon the taste and judgment of the "Hanging Committee" of the National Gallery, in assigning it a place of prominence which neither on account of the artist or its individual merits, it was entitled to'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating image before us, titled "Christ Driving the Money-Changers out of the Temple," is a masterpiece from the National Gallery's collection, although the identity of its creator remains unknown. This painting, presented to the gallery by Philip L. Hinds, Esq., offers a glimpse into the artistic prowess and unique preferences of the renowned artist Bassano. Bassano's interpretation of this biblical scene is a striking departure from the traditional depictions of the subject. In this painting, the chaos of money-brokers, cattle, dogs, and livestock engulfs the temple, leaving no room for the divine presence of Christ. The sublime attributes often associated with sacred subjects are absent, replaced instead by the raw energy and frenzy of the crowd. Despite the controversial nature of this painting, it is worth noting that the "Hanging Committee" of the National Gallery saw fit to display it prominently in their collection. However, some critics have questioned the merit of this decision, arguing that the painting's artistic value does not justify its prominent placement. Regardless of the debate surrounding its significance, "Christ Driving the Money-Changers out of the Temple" is an intriguing and thought-provoking addition to the National Gallery's collection. It challenges viewers to reconsider the role of art in interpreting and presenting sacred stories, and invites us to reflect on the power of artistic expression in shaping our understanding of the world around us.
