New Uniforms of the British Cavalry, 1856. Creator: Charles William Sheeres
New Uniforms of the British Cavalry, 1856. 17th Lancers, Royal Horse Guards Blue, 1st Life Guards, 16th Lancers, 3rd Light Dragoons, 6th Dragoon Guards, 2nd Life Guards, Royal Horse Artillery, 2nd Dragoons...The principal alteration is in the substitution of the German frock for the coatee. Henceforth our stalwart Dragoons will wear a dress more in harmony with that of civilians; while in the disuse of epaulets, which is another distinctive feature, the officers, if they lose one of the symbols of their rank, will also be saved the coat of an expensive and not very handsome distinction. Gold lace, however, will not be dispensed with, as the Light Cavalry, with the exception of the Lancers, will wear five stripes of lace across the breast, as shown in the dress of the 3rd Light Dragoons. In the Royal Horse Artillery, the jacket is retained; but is longer and looser than hitherto'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "New Uniforms of the British Cavalry, 1856" by Charles William Sheeres, showcases the latest attire adopted by the British Cavalry regiments. The image features various regiments, including the 17th Lancers, Royal Horse Guards Blue, 1st Life Guards, 16th Lancers, 3rd Light Dragoons, 6th Dragoon Guards, 2nd Life Guards, and Royal Horse Artillery, 2nd Dragoons. The principal alteration in these new uniforms is the substitution of the traditional coatee with the German frock. This change brings the uniforms more in line with civilian attire, making the soldiers appear less militaristic. Another notable feature is the disuse of epaulets. Officers will no longer bear the coat of this expensive and not very handsome distinction, saving them from its cost. However, gold lace is not entirely abandoned, as the Light Cavalry, with the exception of the Lancers, will wear five stripes of lace across the breast. In the Royal Horse Artillery, the jacket is retained but is longer and looser than before. This photograph was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1856, providing a glimpse into the evolving fashion trends of the British military during that era. The new uniforms represented a shift towards a more civilian-like appearance, reflecting the changing times and the need for practicality and affordability in military attire.
