Nimroud Sculptures...Flight of an Arab Mounted upon a Camel, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Nimroud Sculptures, just received at the British Museum - Flight of an Arab Mounted upon a Camel, 1850. Engraving of...a fine, though unfortunately broken slab, representing the flight of an Arab mounted on a camel: he is closely pursued by two horsemen, whom he seems to be deriding, or from whom he may be imploring quarter. His pursuers ride with their lances directed towards the ground, for the purpose, doubtless, of despatching the wounded, several of whom are scattered about. The Arab guides his camel by the aid of a halter only. In rendering the attitude of the camel, whether in motion or at rest, the ancient sculptor has been remarkably successful'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, acquired at the British Museum in 1850, showcases the Nimroud Sculptures' exquisite artistry with their piece titled 'Flight of an Arab Mounted upon a Camel.' The image portrays an Arab rider skillfully guiding his camel in mid-flight, as he is pursued by two horsemen. The Arab's expression suggests he may be deriding his pursuers or pleading for mercy. The horsemen, in turn, ride with their lances pointed towards the ground, likely to dispatch wounded combatants. The scene is set against the backdrop of ancient Assyria or Babylonia, in the Middle East. The sculptor's mastery of capturing the camel's form in motion or at rest is truly remarkable. This hand-carved slab, now a cherished addition to the British Museum, offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. The 'Illustrated London News' reported on this acquisition in 1850, highlighting the intricate details and the excitement surrounding the discovery of such a significant piece. The image transports us back to the 19th century, providing a window into the past and the artistry of the ancient world.
