Norris Castle, Isle of Wight, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Norris Castle, Isle of Wight, 1844. View of Norris Castle at East Cowes. The architect of this imposing specimen of the castellated style was Sir J. Wyatville, then Mr. Wyatt, who erected it for the late Lord Henry Seymour, who took much pride in it, and received much pleasure from the visits of strangers to his domain. " The deception as to its apparent antiquity", says Mr. Barber, " is complete to those unacquainted with the details of an ancient English castle; and numbers who might first see Norris from the deck of a steam-boat, would be readily impressed with the idea that centuries had elapsed since the period of its erection".(The castle was built in 1799 by James Wyatt, not by Sir Jeffry Wyatville). From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Norris Castle, located on the picturesque Isle of Wight in 1844. The architect behind this magnificent structure was Sir J. Wyatville, also known as Mr. Wyatt at that time. Built for Lord Henry Seymour, the castle stood as a testament to his pride and joy, attracting visitors from far and wide. The image showcases Norris Castle's remarkable resemblance to ancient English castles, with its imposing presence and intricate details fooling even those well-versed in castle architecture. As described by Mr. Barber in the Illustrated London News of 1844, many who caught sight of Norris Castle from a passing steamboat would easily believe it had stood for centuries. Constructed by James Wyatt in 1799 (not Sir Jeffry Wyatville), this engraving transports us back to an era when fortifications like these dotted the British coastline. The landscape surrounding the castle adds to its allure, showcasing both its coastal location and England's natural beauty. Preserved through time within this newspaper clipping from the Victorian era, this print offers us a glimpse into history – capturing not only Norris Castle but also serving as a reminder of our fascination with architectural marvels throughout different periods.
