Omedsk and Obungo, at Nagasaki, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Omedsk and Obungo, at Nagasaki, 1856. Treaty between Japan and Great Britain:.we were ushered in, and found the four principal personages seated, or rather squatted, on the ground...The conference began, and after some conversation our ratified treaty was produced in the simplest style from an envelope, and the seal and subscribed name of Clarendon shown to them, with a little explanation thereof. Meanwhile, the Japanese treaty was brought in by their officials. A large box was opened, and the silk-covered book or treaty carefully unwrapped from its crape cover inside a lacquered case, its silken cords loosed; and all being ready, our Admiral stood forth...and tendered to the Governor, Araoo Iwamino Rami, the treaty of friendship in the name of her Majesty; and the Governor of Nagasaki, on the part of the Emperor, presented the Japanese version...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, depicts the historic moment when Omedsk and Obungo, two high-ranking Japanese officials, met with British representatives in the audience chamber of Nagasaki. The treaty signing between Japan and Great Britain was a significant political event marking the beginning of formal diplomatic relations between the two nations. The scene is set in an ornate audience hall, where the Japanese officials are shown in traditional attire, squatting on the ground in a sign of respect. The British representatives, dressed in Western clothing, are standing, holding the ratified treaty in an envelope, ready to present it to the Japanese officials. The Japanese treaty, a large silk-covered book, is brought in by their officials and carefully unwrapped from its lacquered case. The moment of exchange is captured in this engraving from the Illustrated London News, which provides a detailed account of the meeting. The photograph offers a glimpse into the international relations of the 19th century, where diplomacy was conducted through formal ceremonies and the exchange of treaties. The image also highlights the cultural differences between the East and the West, with the Japanese officials bowing deeply in the traditional kowtowing gesture, while the British representatives present the treaty in a more Western manner. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of this moment, which paved the way for greater interaction and understanding between Japan and the Western world. The identity of the photographer remains unknown, but their work captures a moment in time that continues to fascinate historians and scholars today.
