Opening of the Aberdeen Railway - Dee Bridge and Aberdeen Terminus, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Opening of the Aberdeen Railway - Dee Bridge and Aberdeen Terminus, 1850. In the foreground is represented the elegant bridge across the Dee, from the designs of Messrs. Locke and Errington...In the background are seen the suspension-bridge erected several years ago...the enterprising city of Aberdeen...has, for some time, been the only town of its size in the island without a direct railroad communication with the metropolis; and the commercial advantages likely to result from this establishment of a direct continuous route of upwards of 500 miles to London, cannot be too highly appreciated...Many goods - for instance, those imported into Glasgow from the West Indies, and which must run risk of injury from frequent handling and change of transport - will now be conveyed direct, instead of the circuitous route by rail or canal to Leith or Edinburgh, and thence by sea'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the opening of the Aberdeen Railway in Scotland, specifically the Dee Bridge and Aberdeen Terminus, in the year 1850. In the foreground, the elegant Dee Bridge, designed by Messrs. Locke and Errington, spans the River Dee with grace and sophistication. The bridge's construction marked a significant milestone in the development of transportation infrastructure in Aberdeen, connecting the city directly to other parts of the country for the first time. The background of the photograph reveals the suspension bridge that had been erected several years prior, as well as the bustling city of Aberdeen. For decades, Aberdeen had been the largest city in Scotland without a direct railroad connection to major cities, such as London. The establishment of this railway, spanning over 500 miles, promised to revolutionize the way goods and people moved between the two locations. The Illustrated London News, in its coverage of the event, highlighted the potential benefits of this new railway. Goods, including those imported from distant places like the West Indies, would no longer need to undergo the risky and time-consuming process of multiple transports by rail or canal to Leith or Edinburgh and then by sea. Instead, they could be transported directly and efficiently to their destinations, leading to significant cost savings and time reductions. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and vision of the railway builders, who recognized the need for improved transportation infrastructure and the immense potential it held for the economic growth and connectivity of Aberdeen and beyond.
