Opening of the Central Somerset Railway - Procession in the Abbey Grounds, at Glastonbury, 1854. The line...carries a road of iron into the very heart of pastoral Somerset...It is a single line, and about twelve miles and a half in extreme length, connecting the port of Highbridge on the Bristol and Exeter line with the ancient and pioturesque town of Glastonbury...The station...was gaily decorated with flags and banners...A procession was then formed of the railway officials, clergy, and gentry, and the Mayor and corporation, accompanied by banners and music...the procession wended its way through the ruins of the Abbey, from which it crossed by a temporary bridge to a spacious tent, in which a splendid cold collation for near 500 persons had been provided...About 800 of the working classes of Glastonbury were entertained at dinner in another large tent'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the Opening of the Central Somerset Railway in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, in 1854. The Central Somerset Railway, a single line about twelve miles and a half long, connected the port of Highbridge on the Bristol and Exeter line with the picturesque town of Glastonbury. The station, adorned with flags and banners, was the site of grand celebrations, as evidenced by the procession of railway officials, clergy, gentry, and local dignitaries, led by the Mayor and corporation, proudly carrying banners and accompanied by music. The procession made its way through the ruins of the ancient Glastonbury Abbey, crossing over a temporary bridge, before reaching a spacious tent where a splendid cold collation was prepared for nearly 500 guests. Meanwhile, approximately 800 working-class residents of Glastonbury were treated to a hearty dinner in another large tent, a gesture of appreciation for their contributions to the railway's construction. The Central Somerset Railway marked a significant milestone in the region's transportation history, carrying a road of iron into the very heart of pastoral Somerset.
